Pettenthal, certainly one of Germany’s most en vogue Riesling-vineyards these last years is one of various styles. Some of its wines are more zesty, others more herbal. If these differences are rather linked to micro-Terroirs, or to the winemaker’s signature is still a mystery to me. But of course, in a strict sense, the winemaker is part of the Terroir definition anyway so logically it’s inevitable to have various styles with the exact same soil.
Anyhow, I don’t want to get into Terroir-talk here. What I actually want to say is that the Pettenthal wine in question here - Kühling Gillot‘s Great Growth Riesling – has always been one on the more herbal and “masculine” side. This 2006 vintage is a wine I had on several occasions already since I bought a couple of bottles back in 2007. They always held for a great experience. And so it was again today. Just a day after that VDP wine auction for the Rheingau region, I returned to Kloster Eberbach for the big public presentation of 2010 Great Growth wines of all VDP member estates. Since I missed previous opportunities to taste these wines, I was more than happy to attend this brilliant event.
The 2010 vintage didn’t have an easy start as numerous media already condemned it as a sour (white) wine vintage at a time when harvest wasn’t even fully brought in. And it’s true that for many of the estate’s basic Rieslings, qualities are rather heterogenous. Sometimes you just meet up with friends for a wine tasting without having a particular plan or theme. You just start with one bottle and pick the next one according to the moods, the appetites and desires of everyone. This was such a tasting:
The 2007 Deidesheimer Grosse Hohl GG by Mosbacher is a powerful Riesling. Vibrant and musculous, yet with enough fruit and a beautiful acidity to balance it. Nice presence and nice length. Able to compete within Germany’s Riesling top league.

Hatte ich diesen Wein zuletzt noch mäßig gegenüber meinen Erwartungen und auch 2 mal mit Korkschmecker im Glas, so freue ich mich richtig ihn dieses Mal endlich wieder so gut im Glas zu haben wie damals bei der VDP GG Tour 2007, wo er mich überzeugt hatte.
Vor allem die Nase ist sensationell! Ein intensives verführerisches Gemisch von Biskuit-Teig, Birnen, Rhabarberkuchen und Äpfeln, das einen immer wieder dazu bewegt die Nase ins Glas zu stecken. Read the rest of this entry »
Zuallererst fällt mir beim Lesen des Etiketts auf, dass dieser Wein trotz Hitzejahrgangs 2003 nur 12% Alkohol mit sich trägt. Fast ein Paradox? Die Nase zeigt hingegen äußerst reife Apfel-und Pfirsichfrucht und dazu noch etwas Biskuit-Teig. Am Gaumen wirkt der Wein auch recht reif in seiner Fruchtigkeit mit Pfirsich- und Apfel-Noten, und eine fast oxydativ anmutende Note, die etwas an überreife Ananas erinnert. Im Gasthaus zur Kanne in Deidesheim welches zum Weingut Dr. Bürklin-Wolf gehört, ist die Weinkarte bekannter weise mit unzähligen Preziosen des Guts gespickt. Als wahrer Glücksgriff oder besser gesagt, als wahre Glücks-Empfehlung entpuppte sich der 1999er Forster Pechstein. Um es kurz zu sagen: Ein Weltklasse Weißwein!
