Früher war alles besser! Ein Satz, den man auch in der Weinwelt oft hört und dies nicht selten in Verbindung mit Barolo. Damals, in den 70ern und 80ern waren die Weine noch “klassisch” im grossen Holzfass ausgebaut, hatten fast mehr Tannin als Frucht und waren so auf Langlebigkeit ausgelegt. Undenkbar eine Flasche vor 10 Jahren Kellerreife zu öffnen. Heute sind viele Baroli auf frühzeitigen Genuß getrimmt, erscheinen üppig in der Frucht und mit hohem Alkohol (Obwohl dieser Trend sich auch langsam wieder dreht). Wenn man den Urteilen der Kritiker Glauben schenken darf, stellt 1986 einen der besten Chasse-Spleen–Jahrgänge (coole neue Webseite übrigens) des 20. Jahrhunderts dar. Eine einzige Flasche liegt schon seit Jahren im Keller – ein früherer eBay-Fund, der im Grunde nur auf die richtige Gelegenheit gewartet hat. Diese hat er dann rein zufällig auch gefunden. Natürlich nicht zu Fuß, sondern von Glas zu Glas – Zusammenfassung eines netten Weinabends dessen Anlass ein Geburtstag war, auf den es anzustossen galt.

2009 Rotschiefer Riesling, Weingut St-Antony: Fast goldene Farbe die etwas überreif wirkte. Am Gaumen dann eine üppige Frucht, die eigentlich auch fast von der ganzen Runde gelobt wurde, nur ich fand sie etwas zu dick aufgetragen: Mineralität und Terroir werden dadurch fast überdeckt. Already 2011 and I’m still talking about Christmas Wines. But of course there are valid reasons for this delay: 1) Those are busy days spent in the kitchen and with friends 2) the number of bottles indulged in that time are “above average” . So here are a few more wines from the Christmas holidays.

2009 Hubacker GG, Weingut Keller – This Riesling from a great terroir and vintage is still a baby. Of course I knew that before I uncorked it, but sometimes curiosity wins. Acidity is still to the fore right now but a long decant somewhat helps. Still, the wine feels tight at first, like a thin steel bullet with lots of minerality. But fruit comes up more with each sip: Peach and later some wild herbs are a nice composition. Incredible how slim and at the same time compact and flavour-loaded this wine appears. Lots of substance, nice presence on the palate and oh what a great length. Empties itself on its own but will be an even greater wine in 2-3 years time! ++

Last weekend we had what we then called a diablog meeting which is supposed to mean a wine-evening with fellow blogger and friend Didier who after a year in Germany is moving back to France. So diablog of course, because I am now blogging about those wines, and I am sure he soon will too he blogged about it as well. For the wine selection, there was no topic, so it was a chaotic mix of styles and types; not senseless though, just chaotic: Reds and Whites, aged and younger ones, French, German and even Swiss, Sweet and Dry. The only idea maybe behind one bottle was an ultimate test of courage for someone who was about to leave Germany: (really) aged Riesling. Otherwise it was more about having a good time. So of course, thanks Didier for having me over and also thanks Mizuki for the delicious Japanese dinner.

When wine geeks think of the Eighties, it’s not only Madonna, Top Gun or Miami Vice coming to their minds, but also the rise of modern winemaking in Bordeaux concurring with such great vintages like ’82 ’85 ’86 or ’89.

Thus, tasting some wines from that decade is always something special and I was thrilled when Oskar invited me to his round of friends when he was once again sacrificing some of his treasuries he had gathered over the years.
