Christmas is always a good opportunity for cooking sophisticated meals and finally pulling out those special bottles that were kept for a nice occasion. The dishes are all my creations (of course inspired by cookbooks and blogs) and I hope they met my family’s expectations. Anyway, the have to since I tend to rule the kitchen like a third world dictator ;).

2009 Fritz Haag Brauneberger Kabinett -We first opened (unscrewed) the bottle in the afternoon when my brother and I conceptualized the food and wine pairings (sitting in the wine cellar on folding chairs and “thinking”). We realized it is way too young when we took a sip: still lots of CO2, nearly sparkling like Champagne and also not very well defined yet.

Very nice Riesling fruit and dirty slate tones (dirty in a good way of course) in the nose. Still lots of yeasty aromatics as well. Dito Berlinkitchen. Zu dem Preis von ca 12 Euro ein guter Wert. Kann man sich ruhig ein paar mehr in den Keller legen.

The Intense minerality of the vineyard is showing nicely here. It is coupled with the typical overripe yellow fruit notes of the Pfalz.

Only little thing bothering is a slight bitterness in the end. But still, it is just beautiful to drink right now: like most 2008 Rieslings the drinking window is finally wide open.

The Acham-Magin estate ,member of VDP, is one of the nice options for Forst wines if you don’t want to pay the skyhigh prices of Bürklin-Wolf.

The vineyards of Forst are well known to all Riesling amateurs in the World. Among em, Ungeheur (which means monster if literally translated but in this case the christening actually stems from a certain Mr. Ungeheuer) is for sure one of the top vineyards, maybe not as singular as Pechstein or Kirchenstück, but definitely with enough volcanic rock in the ground to lend the wines charismatic personality. Nun man könnte vielleicht auch sagen, 2 Top Lagen im Vergleich oder auch 2 Top Winzer im Vergleich. Sicher ist aber zumindest: Beide Weine entstanden im Top-Jahrgang 07 und um es schonmal vorweg zu nehmen, werden diesem auch gerecht.
