Every year in September, estates of the VDP association offer some selected wines for auction. This happens on one weekend with 3 distinct auctions. The first (friday) is held in Trier for the estates of Saar and Mosel. The second (saturday) at Kloster Eberbach for Rheingau estates, where also a few wineries from Franken are joining in. The third in Bad Kreuznach (sunday) for estates from Nahe and Ahr, joined by wineries from Rheinhessen and Pfalz. I was lucky to attend the pre-auction tasting at Kloster Eberbach on Saturday. Der Tag fing schonmal gut an. Naiv und ignorant kauften wir am frankfurter Hauptbahnhof ein Hessenticket für 5 Personen und stiegen in den Zug Richtung Heidelberg. Kurz vor unserem Zielbahnhof Bensheim mussten wir, zusammen mit dem Zugbegleiter feststellen, dass wir nicht zur Fahrt im EC berechtigt waren. Der Kontrolleur nahm’s gelassen und drückte beide Augen zu. Wann gibt es sowas schon: Die personifizierte Freundlichkeit und Kulanz in Gestalt eines DB-Kontrolleurs! Weingut Wegeler, 2003 Geheimrat J. Kein Anflug von Firne aber eine schöne Reife. Noch deutlich Frucht. Druckvoll und zupackend am Gaumen.

Blurry outside-view of Tigerpalast
Once again I had the opportunity to attend a First Growth presentation of VDP; this time within the locality of Frankfurt Cabaret and Michelin-starred restaurant Tigerpalast. Again a nice Christmas Wine. This old Riesling from Hessische Staatsweingüter (State-owned wineries of Rheingau) showed of course strong signs of maturity but did not at all seem old. Golden colour, aromatic nose, tasty body with bitter orange notes and a certain freshness, slight acidity.
