Sports for Wine Geeks – The Tuscan Barrel Runners of the “Bravio delle Botti”

So you’re driving down a narrow road through the hills of Tuscany in quest of the next pizzeria, maybe expecting a truck or a bike shooting out at the next turn and suddenly this appears in front of you! 4 runners spinning a barrel and pushing it up the hill. I thought this must be some kind of  joke at first, like in the jackass series, but as the 4 poor, exhausted creatures looked at us with rather not so amused faces, I understood this must be a serious thing.

Later I learned, that this was a running team training for the Bravio delle Botti, a barrel race which takes place in Montepulciano each year. So I heard of horses racing in Siena, of tomato fights and bull races in Spain, but this really nails it for me. Check out this video and you’ll understand!!

Here are a few more snapshots.

And finally… a wine bar! :=)
