This nice bottle was a gift from our good friend Steffen, a true gourmet who appreciates anything good tasting, from regional terrines and sausages to haute cuisine and of course is also a great expert for everything wine. He added that we should drink it fast; the 2003’s being ripe early since it was a too hot of a summer.
I took him by the word and really didn’t wait long – we opened the bottle in the evening on some lamb chops, celebrating our team’s victory against Werder Bremen (went to see the game before). It was in the decanter for 2 hours when we first poured it.
The colour was a shiny elegant red.

It had a nose of red berries, cherries and a touch of Mon Chéri chocolates. On the palate it appeared very juicy, also with red berries, cherries, some raspberries, mixed with a slight sweetness from the alcohol.

Tannins are still there with a light grip but very fine. The finish has a touch of spices with white pepper but also a little freshness. The quite low acidity for a CDP might be the result of this hot 2003 summer and could be a reason this wine won’t age for decades.
The next day the wine was even rounder and quite balanced reminding a well aged Cotes du Rhône. Tannins softened up, the fruit appears even juicier and the spice notes in the finish developed into a more firy kind of taste.

Somehow this wine had the appealing fruit of a young wine , but also already the balance of a more mature wine, and the impression that the wine wont improve much over these next years remains. Also a little depth was missing. But anyways this wine was superbly drinkable and made the lamb chops taste times better. On my scale it might be worth 90 to 91 points! Thank you very much Steffen. See you for the next game.
