2002 Château Chalon, Domaine Macle, Jura

One of the things I like about wine is diversity and the fact that there are always new “wow-moments” no matter how many wines you already had in your life. And just the other day, I had a quite special discovery-moment with a Château-Chalon, a vin jaune from the Jura. In fact, Didier who is an expert for those types of wines since he is himself from the Jura region, liberally brought a bottle when he recently came for a visit.

Pig’s Stomach (Pfälzer Saumagen): a specialty from the Pfalz

image

What sounds a bit disconcerting for the non-connoisseur is actually a local German specialty from the Pfalz region that even statesman like Margaret Thatcher, Michail Gorbatchew, Francois Mitterand and Ronald Reagan were to indulge. In fact Germany’s former Chancellor Helmut Kohl is a big fan of the specialty and traditionnaly invited all his stateguests to a restaurant were his beloved Saumagen is celebrated with pride.

Farewell Wine-Tasting: Not a regular TGIF Night!

IMG_5155

Last weekend we had what we then called a diablog meeting which is supposed to mean a wine-evening with fellow blogger and friend Didier who after a year in Germany is moving back to France. So diablog of course, because I am now blogging about those wines, and I am sure he soon will too he blogged about it as well. For the wine selection, there was no topic, so it was a chaotic mix of styles and types; not senseless though, just chaotic: Reds and Whites, aged and younger ones, French, German and even Swiss, Sweet and Dry. The only idea maybe behind one bottle was an ultimate test of courage for someone who was about to leave Germany: (really) aged Riesling. Otherwise it was more about having a good time. So of course, thanks Didier for having me over and also thanks Mizuki for the delicious Japanese dinner.

2007 Terre d’Argence Blanc, Domaine Mourgues du Gres, VdP du Gard

I try to dig more and more into those Southern French whites. I might be wrong but they seem to catch up to the classy Rhône whites real quick; well at least you definitely get some more bang for your buck it seems.

Here’s a white cuvée of Viognier and Roussanne by Domaine Mourgues du Gres from Beaucaire which is roughly located between Nîmes and Arles, thus not that far from the big Rhône whites.

Neues aus Nierstein

IMG_0072

Impressions from Restaurant Vendôme, Joachim Wissler in Bergisch-Gladbach

Again some food porn impressions from a friend’s dinner at a 3 star restaurant. This time at Vendôme where Joachim Wissler is head of the kitchen. If I remember well there were mixed feelings about the experience there. Again, no notes or explanations of the dishes; I’m not even sure about the order, could as well be totally mixed up. But still, some dishes are definitely nice to look at.
