Finally I’m back home after 2 weeks of agitated travelling, and I have lots of stories to tell from my trip to Shanghai, and some more from my subsequent getaway to Paris. But let’s start time-incoherent with a blind-tasting that kicked off my weekend in Paris. I was a guest at my friend Didier’s home and, as usual, we couldn’t meet without popping a few corks. We each added a couple of bottles to this tasting and they were served to us mixed and blind by Didier’s wonderful wife Mizuki, who has developed a hand for pouring the right bottles. Of course, I mostly brought German wines, as I also know Didier has a weakness for these (one among a few) and they’re rather hard to get in France. WOW, ich hab ja schon öfter mehr als ordentliche Weine von Nachwuchswinzer Florian Fauth vom Weingut Seehof getrunken, aber so einen eindeutigen Aha-Effekt hatte ich nun zum ersten mal. Wahrscheinlich liegt es daran, dass dieser 2009er Westhofener Kirchspiel nach etwa 2 Jahren zum ersten mal die nötige Flaschenreife erlangt hat. Klar ist nun auch für mich, dass Florian Fauth eindeutig in der ersten Liga der rheinhessischen Winzer angekommen ist und somit einigen bekannten Grössen wie Keller oder Wittmann ziemlich nahe kommt. Vor kurzem fand im Weindorf Westhofen ein kleines Festival statt auf das vorher der VDP per mail aufmerksam gemacht hatte. Für 10 Euro gab es dort 18 Weine der berühmten westhofener Lagen zu probieren. Ein guter Deal, dachte ich mir, und war trotz der Wolken am Himmel prompt vor Ort.

Es gab dort 4 Weinstände. Jeweils einer für die Lagen Kirchspiel, Steingrube und Morstein, Sowie ein Stand für alle von VDP Weingütern angebotenen westhofener Weine. Darunter natürlich die Platzhirsche Keller und Wittmann neben den zwei anderen bekannten Grössen Gutzler und K.F. Groebe.

Interessant war es aber erstmal, Weine von den weniger bekannten Gütern zu kosten. Auch ist es einfach unglaublich, wie viele junge Winzertalente das Füllhorn Rheinhessen zur Zeit hervorbringt, auch abseits der pfiffigen Vereinigung Message in a Bottle. Read the rest of this entry »

Last weekend was awesome! Together with some friends I was lucky to be welcomed by Didier from Vimpressionistes in a cosy holiday appartment in the beautiful village of Château Chalon in the Jura region of Eastern France. First of all, to finally meet his beautiful baby-daughter but of course also to indulge a memorable blindtasting.

Was bin ich im Verzug mit meinen Postings! Gerade komme ich zurück aus New York und stelle fest, dass noch zig Themen aus der Zeit vor der Reise unbehandelt in der Warteschlange stehen.

Dazu gehört dieser Besuch des Restaurants Favorite in Mainz. Bei der Favorite handelt sich um ein alteingesessenes Hotel welches erhaben auf einen Hügel gelegen, die Stadt mitsamt des Rheins überblickt. Das gediegene Gourmet Restaurant unter der Leitung von Chefkoch Tim Meierhans feiert Gerüchten zufolge seit ein paar Jahren ein Renewal und war allemal ein Besuch wert, nicht zuletzt der grossartigen Weinkarte wegen, die tolle Weine aus Rheinhessen, Nahe und Rheingau (aber auch aus dem Ausland) zu unglaublich schonenden Preisen anbietet. A week ago I spontaneously decided to hurry to Berlin on Sunday for attending the “Gala Grosser Weine”, a wine presentation organized by a local wine store where many top German and international winemakers were presenting their products. It was a great event! Out of the German winemakers I already knew many and previously tried their wines at more close by presentations and thus the core attractions to me were big international names like Giacosa, Château Canon, Ridge, Moric or even Château La Nerthe.
