Tasting the new Vintage at Keller in Rheinhessen

Last saturday, we stopped-by at Keller estate’s yearly vintage presentation in Flörsheim-Dalsheim.

The German 2010 vintage has received some early bashing by the press, at a time when the first wines haven’t even been released. Right now, voices are more mixed and many feel reminded of the 2008 vintage which was also a bit more on acidity than fruit and still managed to find many fans. Probably 2010 is even more a so called winemaker’s vintage where high quality also depends on the instinct, talent and luck of the vintner. What one can affirm for sure is lacking in 2010 is quantity! Volumes were down approx 30% compared to 2009. Read the rest of this entry »

3 x Riesling Updates

2006 Terrassen Riesling, Weingut Loimer, Kamptal

Der 2006er Terrassen Riesling, den ich schon merhmals im Glas hatte zeigt jetzt Reife. Ob er gar seinen Höhepunkt schon überschritten hat? Ein intensiver Ton der etwas Richtung Petrol neigt dominiert das Bild. Hintenraus fängt eine leichte Bitterkeit an sich zu zeigen: wird sie etwa in Zukunft das Zepter übernehmen? Die Aromenvielfalt und -Tiefe scheint mir geringer zu werden. Ein schöne, fast salzige Mineralik ist aber immer noch vorhanden. Read the rest of this entry »

Great Wines Gala in Berlin

A week ago I spontaneously decided to hurry to Berlin on Sunday for attending the “Gala Grosser Weine”, a wine presentation organized by a local wine store where many top German and international winemakers were presenting their products. It was a great event! Out of the German winemakers I already knew many and previously tried their wines at more close by presentations and thus the core attractions to me were big international names like Giacosa, Château Canon, Ridge, Moric or even Château La Nerthe.
