Besuch im Weingut “Chat-Sauvage” – Eine Burgund-Enklave im Riesling-Land

IMG_0514

Schulz lässt seine Raritäten-Sammlung bei Christie’s in London versteigern und Read the rest of this entry »

Rheingau Wine Auction tasting at Kloster Eberbach

Every year in September, estates of the VDP association offer some selected wines for auction. This happens on one weekend with 3 distinct auctions. The first (friday) is held in Trier for the estates of Saar and Mosel. The second (saturday) at Kloster Eberbach for Rheingau estates, where also a few wineries from Franken are joining in. The third in Bad Kreuznach (sunday) for estates from Nahe and Ahr, joined by wineries from Rheinhessen and Pfalz. I was lucky to attend the pre-auction tasting at Kloster Eberbach on Saturday. Tasting the new Vintage at Keller in Rheinhessen

IMG_8463

Last saturday, we stopped-by at Keller estate’s yearly vintage presentation in Flörsheim-Dalsheim.

The German 2010 vintage has received some early bashing by the press, at a time when the first wines haven’t even been released. Right now, voices are more mixed and many feel reminded of the 2008 vintage which was also a bit more on acidity than fruit and still managed to find many fans. Probably 2010 is even more a so called winemaker’s vintage where high quality also depends on the instinct, talent and luck of the vintner. What one can affirm for sure is lacking in 2010 is quantity! Volumes were down approx 30% compared to 2009. Read the rest of this entry »

South African wines: a Shortlist

In order to sum-up my wine experiences during my trip to Stellenbosch and the Cape Region of South Africa, here’s a list of white and red wines I enjoyed most. Some of these were already mentioned in previous postings, some others make their first appearance here.

2010 Iona Sauvignon Blanc from Elgin. Very crisp and dry. Not much exotic fruit here which is due to the slightly cooler climate of Elgin. But still vibrant and with substance with grass and gooseberry on the fore. One that you could put away for a year. We had it at Ernie Els’ (the famous golfer) restaurant Big Easy, which I can recommend for its beautiful premises and relaxed atmosphere but also for their quality food. Especially the oysters we indulged there went perfectly with the Iona. Read the rest of this entry »

1999 Vosne-Romanée, Domaine Hudelot-Noellat, Burgundy

IMG_6572

This bottle is part of my Burgundy experimental series where I try to pick bottles of good vintages, but from vignerons which are not of worldwide reputation. I was told by my undercover informants, that Hudelot-Noellat would be such a winery and ordered their Vosne-Romanée village wine from the solid 1999 vintage. Read the rest of this entry »

1999 Vosne-Romanée, Domaine Michel Gros

IMG_5832

Domaine Michel Gros is one of the better names in Vosne. And since there is a famous adage for Burgundy saying “The name of the producer is as important as the name of the vineyard”, this is a crucial piece of information.

But what is it based on? Just subjective studying of websites and forums, I have to admit.

The domaine owns a few interesting vineyards in the Côte de Nuits such as the Premier Cru Clos des Réas as a monopoly but even if this name sounds quite euphonious as well, it isn’t Read the rest of this entry »
