So last weekend my blog turned 5 ! And actually I wouldn’t even have realized it, didn’t I flip through my archives last week way back to the first post. Anyway, so I was in Berlin for the weekend doing some sight-seeing in our lovely capital and stopped by for a quick hello at Martin’s Berlin Riesling Cup 2010 event which was just going on.
And what luck, I just arrived at the right time participating for 2 flights that contained the top 3 wines of the evening! Happy Birthday to me I thought when I left, and thanks of course to Martin who’s probably the most relaxed wine lover I know.

Pfälzer Winzer beschränken sich bekannterweise bei den Rotweinen seit einigen Jahren nicht mehr nur auf regionale Rebsorten sondern bauen auch immer mehr auf die bekannten internationalen Trauben. Der Erfolg gibt Ihnen recht, und meine bisherigen Eindrücke machen mich auch immer wieder neugierig.

The vineyards of Forst are well known to all Riesling amateurs in the World. Among em, Ungeheur (which means monster if literally translated but in this case the christening actually stems from a certain Mr. Ungeheuer) is for sure one of the top vineyards, maybe not as singular as Pechstein or Kirchenstück, but definitely with enough volcanic rock in the ground to lend the wines charismatic personality. ..and tasted delicious! I’ve never eaten tripes that good before. Well, maybe I’ve never eaten them before, I’m not so sure. Those were served at Koehler Ruprecht estate in Kallstadt during the local wine fest. Really tender and with such a hearty and delicious sauce they were just splendid.

Das ist nun die vorletzte Flasche vom 06er Sauvignon vom Markus Schneider aus Ellerstadt. Ab in den Dekanter damit (mit 2 Kühlaggregaten drunter = mein Patent!). Anfangs wirkt er überreif, kernig und unangenehm bitter auch im Finish. Nebenbei zeigt er für meine Begriffe gar keine Sauvignon Typizität mehr außer einer sehr präsenten Säure.
