2005 Idus de Vall Llach, Priorat

“Idus” is the name of the second wine of Celler Vall Lach which is located in Porrera within the Priorato region. It is a Cuvée of mainly Carinena and Garnacha grapes, but also includes varieties such as Merlot, Syrah and Cabernet. Colour is dark and brilliant with great intensity.

Big tears on the inside of the glass instantly remind that the label announced 15,5 % alc. Intense nose of cherries and Vanilla, but also some herbs and tar; unfortunately also a slight alcoholic tone is puncturing.

After 3 hours of decanting, tannins are feeling soft on the palate. Fruit is very intense and clear of cherries, reminding a little of cherry-jam, but on the other hand it is by far not as jammy as some other modern Spanish wines. On the mid-palate a little bitter-tone is also noticeable and on the back end of the palate the alcoholic afterburner is quite strong.

All in all this is not something I love really, but not truly a bad wine either, I just don’t like that strong alcohol touch.(btw I already had wines with 16% which didn’t feel alcoholic at all). Then again this could be much better with the right food match 87-89

2006 Alaia, Dehesa de Rubiales, Castilla y Leon, Spanien

You and I know it; this blog calling itself a blind tasting blog recently generated far too many posts about food stalls and other dispensable topics digressing far away from the serious duty it bears to throw light on the successful and less successful outcomes of the art of winemaking. Yuck :=) … What I actually wanted to say is that it was really time again for a post justifying the name of this blog. And luckily it occurred that our friend Nick offered to host a blind tasting of Spanish red wines. There were 2 simple rules to follow: the bottles shouldn’t stem from any of the 2 main wine regions (Rioja and Ribera) and they shouldn’t be too old. No problem! Offer accepted! Naturally, as abiding by the official wine tasting protocol, all the bottles were properly covered and mixed before the tasting, thus allowing a fair comparison.

2002 Vietor y Leon Reserva, Valdepenas – Beautiful and brilliant colour. Nose is rather discrete, first only some hints of spice, later some plum fruit but never really getting intensive. Palate starts with light vanilla a.k.a. traces of barrel wood, goes on with Read the rest of this entry »

2002 Mont du Toît, Cape of Good Hope, SA

IMG_3789

This is a more highly priced South-African wine than those I used to drink until now. I am not yet a great fan of South Africans, although all of them I tried were of solid quality. But I often find these red wines to have quite intense smoke aromas, ranging from slightly smoked ham, to heavily smoked bacon. It’s maybe a matter of taste, but I feel that these smokey notes are somehow unbalancing the wines. Read the rest of this entry »

Random Red Wines with Oskar

IMG_2028

It was time again for a nice red wine evening. We didn’t have a real topic and gathered some random bottles of red wine from 1972 to 1997.

Here are the notes:

1972 Gigondas, Henri de Villamont

We started with this old Gigondas. Luckily we had no problem with the cork. In the glass it had a nice although slightly blurry red colour. In the nose a little age note with cellar and mushroom. On the palate, lively acidity which probably kept this wine alive. Yet it still appeared balanced and was nicely drinkable but had a rather short finish.

This article is about our last trip to New York in September 2005. I wanted to write about it much earlier but somehow I never managed to do so. So here it is.
We came to New York to visit a friend for the holidays. Since we stayed more than a week in Manhattan, we decided to rent a car and make a daytrip to Long Island. Read the rest of this entry »
