First of all: Was für eine Location! Klar bot das Kloster Eberbach auch einen erhabenen, dem Anlass entsprechenden Rahmen, doch ist das Rheingauer Kleinod schon ziemlich abgelegen und für die wenigsten praktisch zu erreichen gewesen. Der Frankfurter Palmengarten bietet mit seinem Gesellschaftshaus nicht nur ein prunkvolles Juwel, sondern ist für jeden Besucher problemlos per Bus, Bahn oder Auto zu erreichen. Ich hoffe, dass der Palmengarten nun dauerhaft Heimat der VDP Grosse Gewächse Probe wird.

Und somit sind wir schon beim Thema: Dem neuen Jahrgang Großer Gewächse aus Deutschland. Und mit 2012 gibt es kaum etwas zu meckern. Wenn es einen Große Gewächse Jahrgang gibt, bei dem man das sprichwörtliche “blind Zuschlagen” anwenden kann, dann ist es wohl dieser. Und so kann man sich beim Probieren auch mal vollkommen den tiefgründigeren Themen widmen und versuchen die regionalen Entwicklungen zu erschmecken. Denn es tut sich was: Vor allem der Rheingau wacht deutlich aus seinem Dornrösschenschlaf auf und bringt vermehrt Spannung ins Glas. An der Nahe ist die Marschrichtung schon länger bekannt und die Weine scheinen jedes Jahr eine Schippe draufzulegen. Das Gleiche gilt für Rheinhessen. An Mosel und Saar gibt es einige beeindruckende Kollektionen, die auch eine große Vielfalt an Stilistiken darbieten – Weingüter wie Heymann-Löwenstein, Van Volxem oder Peter Lauer sind “at the top of their game”. Doch auch Weine von Dr. Loosen oder St. Urbanshof und andere gefallen gut.

Just a day after that VDP wine auction for the Rheingau region, I returned to Kloster Eberbach for the big public presentation of 2010 Great Growth wines of all VDP member estates. Since I missed previous opportunities to taste these wines, I was more than happy to attend this brilliant event.

The 2010 vintage didn’t have an easy start as numerous media already condemned it as a sour (white) wine vintage at a time when harvest wasn’t even fully brought in. And it’s true that for many of the estate’s basic Rieslings, qualities are rather heterogenous. For the Great Growths however, I read more and more opinons that are highly praising this new vintage, even putting it above last year’s great success. Read the rest of this entry »

A week ago I spontaneously decided to hurry to Berlin on Sunday for attending the “Gala Grosser Weine”, a wine presentation organized by a local wine store where many top German and international winemakers were presenting their products. It was a great event! Out of the German winemakers I already knew many and previously tried their wines at more close by presentations and thus the core attractions to me were big international names like Giacosa, Château Canon, Ridge, Moric or even Château La Nerthe. Not much time to take pictures, everyone was already leaving Paradise at that point…

This really was like a walk through paradise. At the VDP Grosse Gewächse Tour I had the pleasure to attend, I was able to taste some of the most acclaimed Rieslings from Nahe Rheinhessen and Pfalz. Ok technically seen, Rheingau and Mosel which are also big compartments of Riesling Paradise were left out, but I have to admit that it would have been too many wines in the end, and I felt lucky enough with 42 top-estates that were represented.
