Das Beaujolais-Gebiet hat immer noch nicht den besten Ruf. Durch die in den Fünfziger Jahren als Vermarktungs-Werkzeug ins Leben gerufenen Beaujolais-Nouveau-Kampagnen wird das gesamte Anbaugebiet immer noch für diese Kater-verusachenden Jungweine in Sippenhaft genommen, und so spielen auch die berühmten “10 Crus du Beaujolais” international kaum eine Rolle. Dabei können diese Weine aus der Rebsorte Gamay durchaus so edel und langlebig sein wie manch ein Pinot aus den burgundischen Nachbarregionen und gibt es auch eine handvoll renommierter Winzer. We all know Gamay as the grape of Beaujolais, for which this region occupies a quasi monopolistic role. Nonetheless there are other wine regions, suprising ones, that grow this underrepresented varietal.

Wines at OFF – part 1

Besides the chef’s cooking presentations, the Omnivore food festival is also a showcase for high quality produce such as meats, cheeses and of course wine.

A good dozen of mostly French vignerons were presenting their so-called “Vins Naturels”, a non-certified or -controlled ideology of winemaking which basically reduces the process to a minimum of interference (pumping, filtration) or additons (non-indigenous yeasts, sulfites). French wine law doesn’t allow declaring the vintage on a “Vin de Table”, the most basic of classifications in the AOC system. Thus, some vignerons who apply their own rules on winemaking and mostly coming from the Vins Naturels branch have to be quite imaginative for letting their customers know what’s in their bottles. This bottle I came accross, a Gamay from de Loire region by négociant-winemaker Olivier Lemasson shows a drawing which indicates the vintage -pretty cool, huh?

2009 Les Originelles, Domaine Robert Sérol, Côte Roannaise

Wer kennt die Côte Roannaise? Diese AOC gehört zwar zum Großgebiet der Loire, liegt aber fernab von den Gebieten um den Städten Tours und Angers, nämlich in der Region Auvergne, gar nicht so weit von der beschaulichen Stadt Clermont-Ferrand, die vor allem wegen des Reifenkonzerns Michelin bekannt ist.
