Domäne Mechtildshausen Dinner

Domäne Mechtildshausen is a farm and restaurant estate not far from Wiesbaden and Mainz. I could resume its essence in a few words: they grow their own organic veggies, they raise their own Charolais beef and other animals, they serve all those fresh ingredients in their restaurant, and last but not least…they have a great wine list in this restaurant with emphasis on red Burgundies, but also lots of nice whites from Rheingau, Rheinhessen and Nahe. I can only recommend this place for its solid cuisine with deliciously fresh ingredients of high quality. But let’s get back to those nice wines. Read the rest of this entry »

Tuscany Blind Tasting

Finally a real blind tasting again. The last times we’ve been quite lax with our club’s rules I have to admit ;), but this evening all bottles were covered and then randomly numbered (and eventually re-mixed another time) so no bias was possible in our judgments. For this sum-up I kept the order of the tasting of course, just in case you wonder why vintages are so mixed up here. The theme was Tuscany, which includes of course the vast Chianti region, but also other famous appellation like Brunello di Montalcino for example. Generally the wines are made with the Sangiovese grape, but are most frequently combined in Cuvées with other varietals. Ok this should be enough theory! We were thirsty!

2002 Mont du Toît, Cape of Good Hope, SA

This is a more highly priced South-African wine than those I used to drink until now. I am not yet a great fan of South Africans, although all of them I tried were of solid quality. But I often find these red wines to have quite intense smoke aromas, ranging from slightly smoked ham, to heavily smoked bacon. It’s maybe a matter of taste, but I feel that these smokey notes are somehow unbalancing the wines. Read the rest of this entry »

Comparative Tasting: Southern Wines from Portugal, Spain, Greece and France

I think we had this topic before, but aren’t there countless excellent wines in the Mediterranean regions to discover? The difference might be that this time I can at least come up with something like a link between all these wines.
The first two stem from the Douro river region in Portugal. The third one is a Spanish Ribera del Duero, the same river than the two before but on Spanish soil.

Oscar (who brought the first 3 wines) thought it would be interesting to compare the styles of two neighbour regions. The fourth wine is a Greek Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot Cuvée called Biblia Xora, produced in the hills of Makedonia (North-Eastern Greece, no more link here : )). Finally I contributed a Southern French wine from Faugères in Languedoc.
Let’s get it on! Read the rest of this entry »

WBW #14: Baron zu Knyphausen 2002 Spätburgunder (Pinot Noir), Rheingau, Germany Tasting Note

I read with great curiosity about the Wine Blogging Wednesday Project and I was kind of disappointed that I only discovered it now and missed the last 13 editions. But even today I am a (3-day-) late participant to the 14th edition which is about New New World Pinot Noirs. I hope next time I’ll be more punctual and a better WBW participant. VN Baron zu Knyphausen 2002 Spätburgunder

knyphausenpinot (Small)

So sehen das übrigens auch Read the rest of this entry »
