1997 Crozes-Hermitage, Alain Graillot

IMG_9218

This is gonna be a very short tasting note. In fact, this Crozes-Hermitage by acclaimed winemaker Alain Graillot , who also holds an important role in the rebirth of this AOC, clearly appears over the top. It’s a shame since the wine shows a beautiful structure and weight with lots of backbone and fine-grained tannins. But the fruit just seems too cooked and a little muted and takes away all the pleasure.

The 2003 I had a few weeks ago wasn’t too bad, but I was hoping that the 1997 would crush it. Fail! Still, I won’t be giving up on this producer. I just wasn’t very lucky!

2003 Crozes-Hermitage, Alain Graillot

IMG_7906

This wine, drunk from a small bottle, was another step towards discovering wines from the Northern Rhône. I was curious how this region would show in this vintage which is known as sizzling hot in European meteorology, and also how a Crozes-Hermitage, probably the AOC with the biggest reputation for making cheaper wines in the region would perform, knowing that Alain Graillot is alledgedly one of the secret tipps there. 1999 Cornas, Domaine A. Clape – Discovering Syrah at its best.

IMG_7632

A few weeks ago I watched this episode of  WLTV, where Gary V’s guest,  Michael Madrigale, sommelier at Bar Boulud in NY, talks about his life and how he got into wine. I was particularly attentive when he explained how he finally discovered the wines of the Northern Rhône , a wine-region he didn’t understand at first, but is totally obsessed with now.  I was fascinated by the level of passion in his words and felt that I could clearly follow his reasoning on how his connection to Rhône wines developed.

While watching this, I also realized that my own experience with Northern Rhône is definitely limited if not non-existent (supermarket Crozes-Hermitage doesn’t do the appelation right I guess). And since passion can be contagious: right after the show, inspired by the praising of matured Syrah, I screened the web for interesting bottles. Read the rest of this entry »

Southern Rhône Blind Tasting

Last week it got as good as it can get for a wine geek. Not only did our hosts Eva and Nick cook a delicious dinner, but they also complotted a superb blind tasting of “Southern Rhône Reds” for us. But there was even more to come since after that “official program”, we indulged 2 extra bottles and the surprise effect wasn’t small.
Here are the wines in the order they were tasted. We only uncovered the bottles in the end after our verdicts.

Solter Riesling Sekt Brut 2007
