As the Mas Daumas Gassac from my previous post is a legend for the Languedoc, Georg Breuer estate equally is an icon for its own wine region, the Rheingau. The late Bernhard Breuer was a pioneer for the renaissance of dry Riesling in Germany and his wines often are cathedrals of minerality that can age for years without losing freshness while gaining in complexity.
Vor gut 2 Wochen fand im Weingut Schätzel wieder ein Event aus der Reihe “Tatort und Blutwurst” statt. Im gemütlich eingerichteten Heimkino der Schätzels wird der Tatort per Festplattenrecorder auf die Leinwand projeziert. The Picture above shows the “Bibliotheca Subterranea” of Schloss Johannisberg. It is the oldest wine cellar of the Rheingau region and includes one last bottle of Riesling from 1748. The Northern German city of Wolfsburg could also be called “German Motown” as it is mainly known for having the Volkswagen headquarters and consists of plenty of Volkswagen factory buildings. In recent years though, the car company has invested in building an attraction park and visitor centre for car lovers, including a luxury hotel of the Ritz-Carlton brand. The hotel facility is nestled in between the visitor center and from its windows one can overview a harbour basin and the impressive Volkwagen factory with its century-old smokestacks. I’d call it industrial romanticism. More important for food travelers though is the hotel’s own fine dining Restaurant Aqua, where Chef Sven Elverfeld has built a reputation for being one of Germany’s top chefs.
Nun war es wieder soweit. Das Top-Event des Jahres für deutsche Weine, die Mainzer Weinbörse des VDP ist über die Bühne gegangen. Die Winzer präsentieren hier jährlich vor allem ihre neuen Weine des letzten Jahrgangs, also in diesem Fall von 2011.
Und obwohl 2011 schon so viele Vorschusslorbeeren erhalten hat, bestimmt zu recht, ist es für mich definitiv kein einfach zu beurteilender Jahrgang. Da waren 2008, 2009 und 2010 irgendwie viel eindeutiger, denn die Kernaussagen hatten wohl viel mehr tragweite. Read the rest of this entry »
Der Hauptdarsteller für das Oster-Essen unter Freunden war schon am Vortag besorgt. Ein 2,3 Kilo Wildfang-Loup de Mer, der frischer nicht hätte sein können. Ausnehmen und schuppen musste ich diesen Kaventsmann selbst, was aber eine leichtere Aufgabe ist als man annehmen könnte.
