Le P’tit Rouquin Wine Label

French wine law doesn’t allow declaring the vintage on a “Vin de Table”, the most basic of classifications in the AOC system. Thus, some vignerons who apply their own rules on winemaking and mostly coming from the Vins Naturels branch have to be quite imaginative for letting their customers know what’s in their bottles. This bottle I came accross, a Gamay from de Loire region by négociant-winemaker Olivier Lemasson shows a drawing which indicates the vintage -pretty cool, huh?

2009 Les Originelles, Domaine Robert Sérol, Côte Roannaise

Wer kennt die Côte Roannaise? Diese AOC gehört zwar zum Großgebiet der Loire, liegt aber fernab von den Gebieten um den Städten Tours und Angers, nämlich in der Region Auvergne, gar nicht so weit von der beschaulichen Stadt Clermont-Ferrand, die vor allem wegen des Reifenkonzerns Michelin bekannt ist. La Gandriole, Coteaux-du-Loir, Domaine Le Briseau

Nathalie und Christian Chaussard haben Domaine Le Briseau in 2002 übernommen und sich der Riege der “vin naturel” Hersteller der Loire angeschlossen.

Die Anbauprinzipien werden von einem Weinhändler wie folgt beschrieben:

All vineyard work is done according to the principles of organic viticulture (with the certification of Qualité France): no pesticides, insecticides or chemical fertilizers are used; nettle and horsetail decoctions are sprayed on the foliage; copper is used in modest quantity (less than 5kg/HA); the vines are plowed and grass allowed to grow in the rows. In 2006, the estate started its conversion to biodynamic principles.

2007 Vouvray “Èpaulé Jeté”, Catherine & Pierre Breton, Loire

Catherine & Pierre Breton are makers of natural wines in Restigné near Bourgueil. And many would even say that they feature among the spearhead of the growing natural winemakers group in the Loire Valley; their most famous representor certainly being Nicolas Joly (Founder of Renaissance des Appelations making the famous Coulée de Serrant wine).
