Ever since I lived a couple of years in Montpellier I knew about the iconic wines of the region but being a student, I rarely had the opportunity to get a taste. Mas de Daumas Gassac was one of these wines: a legend. Founder and owner Aimé Guibert built up a Grand Cru estate out of the blue – a greenfield project, as the businessman would say. He planted Cabernet vines in 1972 and with the help of some reknown oenologue,s achieved to bottle a convincing wine which the French magazine Gault Millau called ‘a Languedoc Château Lafite’ in 1982. I was looking forward to this comparison for a few months now. A bottle of 2005 Côte-Rôtie Brune et Blonde by Guigal was lying in my cellar for longer. A few months ago, as I discovered a Greek wine shop in Frankfurt, I stumbled upon this other bottle, a 2007 Syrah named Evangelo by Domaine Gerovassiliou. The shop owner explained that this wine is supposed to represent a Greek kind of Côte Rôtie, as it is made exactly with the same methods and even uses 8% ( double the amount compared to the Guigal!) of the white grape Viognier within the wine – a common thing in the Northern Rhône to stabilize color, add acidity and flavor to the wine. And as both wines even are in the same high price class (around 40 Euro), I thought this could only be an interesting showdown. Read the rest of this entry »

1999 ist laut professionellen Bewertern ein gutes Jahr im Burgund gewesen, und diese Einschätzung hat sich schon 2 Mal als goldrichtig erwiesen. Zuletzt auch bei meiner ersten Probe eines Pinots der Domaine Michel Gros: Es war damals der Vosne-Romanée (auf Englisch). Nun muss der Nuits-Saint-Georges aus der selben Domaine dran glauben. Nuits ist in der Regel die etwas kräftigere Appelation, und so war ich gespannt, ob der Wein nicht noch ansprechender sein würde. Read the rest of this entry »
