Here’s a quick update on Château Boyd-Cantenac from Margaux out of the blockbuster vintage 2005. It’s a 3rd Grand Cru Classé which I haven’t tasted for about 3 years. My last posts about it can be found here and here.
For the occasion of a homemade steak dinner I thought it would be an appropriate bottle and a good opportunity to check on its current state.

The wine has always be kind of open and I actually wondered if would ever close down for a few years.
Well, for now it didn’t. Instead it offered us great hedonistic drinking pleasure and of course we had nothing against it. The nose is intense and perfumed of red berries, chocolate, something floral and green which made me think of rose stems. No prominent oak tone.
On the palate it instantly shows a great drinkability. Weight and structure are just beautiful. The wine is described by a refreshing juiciness coming from a perfectly integrated acidity. Harmonious juiciness comes to my mind. Tannins are polished and fresh, and elevate the finish to a continuous cycle of glass-raising.
This Margaux is just in a delightful drinking phase. Right now I have big doubts that this wine will ever close down. I also wonder how this could get any better? Is this a 2005 Bordeaux that is meant to be drunk young?
Maybe its composition of 66% Cab, 22% Merlot, 8% Petit Verdot and 4% Cab Franc is a hint. It seems to be meant as a fruit-driven wine. Still I’d like to have opinions by experienced Margaux or Boyd-Cantenac drinkers.
Anyhow, I think this wine is a great recommendation and it worked splendidly well with a juciy steak. A wine auction site gives it a price quote of 29 Euro which is under the primeur release price of about 33 (including tax).

However shops in Europe seem to sell it at around 40 Euro. Only in the US there are shops selling it at around 30, but one has to keep in mind exchange rates. Of course, the cheaper, the better, but all these prices are worth being paid.
