A lot of voices on cellartracker.com are saying that 2004 Château Pontet-Canet is having a weird phase right now, being quite close and not really in place…
Well, I can only agree with that opinion. The wine certainly has a nice structure, but tannins still have a long way to go before being ready. Right now it feels quite harsh on the palate even if fruit sparks through in a bright and shiny way on occasions.
The nose also isn’t at its best, showing some kind of Cabernet mold-tone, the one that could easily be mistaken as a cork flaw, but certainly isn’t. Otherwise it is a totally closed nose right now!
Well at least the color is flawless at the moment.

But kidding aside, I am really curious on how this wine will show in a few years. There’s quite some potential. Once tannins will have mellowed it seems the wine will have great balance. Also, it is far from being overly alcoholic and even has a gentle feel to it with some floral tones.
