How can one not love Enomatics? (Seen at Gregorelli’s restaurant in Frankfurt)

…these charming little aluminium-wine-dispensing cubes! OK, I don’t want to make advertising for a brand that seems to be outrageously successful anyway these days, but I just have to say that it puts a smile on my face every time I see one of these guys. But of course, you also have to make good use of em, so maybe I should rather praise Gregorelli’s restaurant in Frankfurt for the good filling: a couple of blockbuster Italian wines, including Sassicaia and Tignanello. Funky Labels: “Petite Petit”, Michael David Winery, California

Again one from the colorful US shelves. The intriguing name “Petite Petit” is actually a wink to the wine’s blend composed of Petite Syrah and Petit Verdot. I like the humor in it and I wonder how “big” the wine actually tastes… See more funky labels wines.

2006 Niersteiner Pettenthal, Weingut Kühling-Gillot, Rheinhessen

Pettenthal, certainly one of Germany’s most en vogue Riesling-vineyards these last years is one of various styles. Some of its wines are more zesty, others more herbal. If these differences are rather linked to micro-Terroirs, or to the winemaker’s signature is still a mystery to me. But of course, in a strict sense, the winemaker is part of the Terroir definition anyway so logically it’s inevitable to have various styles with the exact same soil.

Anyhow, I don’t want to get into Terroir-talk here. What I actually want to say is that the Pettenthal wine in question here – Kühling Gillot‘s Great Growth Riesling – has always been one on the more herbal and “masculine” side. This 2006 vintage is a wine I had on several occasions already since I bought a couple of bottles back in 2007. They always held for a great experience. And so it was again today. Funky Labels: Three Thieves “The Show” Malbec, Mendoza

As wines have to be marketed more as brands in the US than in Europe, there are numerous colorful and funky labels to be found on the shelves. I spotted this one at a Whole Foods Store in Fort Lauderdale. Is it suggesting a funky rodeo-style Malbec? At least it reminds me that I have to drink a few more Malbecs soon.

Restaurant Kronenschlösschen* in Hattenheim, Germany – Classic with a twist

After a spree to the Rheingau wine region on a beautiful sunday we were looking for a place to have dinner. While we couldn’t come up with any casual restaurant that day, we had the sudden inspiration to go for Patrick Kimpel‘s fine dining restaurant within the Hotel Kronenschlößchen in Hattenheim.
