Admittedly, I haven’t been to many fine dining restaurants in Asia and thus my experience there is quite limited.
But within the few places I’ve been it happened more than once that I got a mitigated opinion about the way degustation menus are being composed. Precisely, it appeared to me that effort is focussed on putting as many fancy ingredients together as possible – Foie Gras, precious hams, truffles or others – as if the only goal was to have a certain kind of glamour that diners might expect when they go to such a restaurant. Sip Wine Bar in Seminyak, Bali

Bali is an island with a gastronomic variety I wouldn’t have imagined beforehand. Not only can you get exotic Balinese specialties or excellent seafood, but you can also find a good amount of Western restaurants.

Babi Guling at Ibu Oka in Ubud, Bali

the Balinese national dish Babi Guling is a spiced roast suckling pig usually served as a portion of carved off meat with a bit of crispy pig skin on rice.

You can find many stalls and restaurants on the island serving Babi Guling, but we decided to take the drive to one well known but also quite touristy restaurant in Ubud to get a taste of this specialty. Read the rest of this entry »

Khong Lock Yuen’s “Bak Kut Teh” in Kuala Lumpur

Bak Kut Teh, which literally means Meat Bone Tea (in “Hokkien” dialect) is a Chinese Soup but which is most common and popular at foodstalls in Malaysia and Singapore where it has found a honouring and hungry foodie crowd that allowed the settling and development of this specialty.
